Q: Nerve pain treatment
Have been given some Nortriptyline for a seven year problem with nerve pain but hesitant about taking them. Concerned about the side effects. Does anyone have personal experience of this treatment? I believe it is a newer version of Amitriptyline.

A: Don’t hesitate! Amitriptyline is brilliant for nerve pain. I have serious back issues and if I don’t take amitriptyline, my feet feel like they are eight feet long and throbbing and burning all over. The worst side effects are constipation and a dry mouth, but senna tablets will treat the first and the second gets better with time. The only serious side effects are that if you take an overdose it can cause an irregular heart beat which can kill you, but you wouldn’t be that silly, would you? Dive in and get rid of your pain.

Q: What is the best treatment for sciatic nerve pain?
I usually have it after I am in bed and it wakes me up. Also have it when I sit for a long period of time when I get up. It is very painful and hard for me to go back to sleep when it wakes me up. Any ideas?

A: Treatment

In most cases, conservative treatments are effective for sciatica. A short period of rest, coupled with the application of cold packs and heat packs to the affected area, reduces inflammation of the nerve. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines can also be taken to decrease inflammation. Injection of corticosteriods may also be recommended to decrease swelling of the nerve. Physical therapy and short walks are also recommended.

If after three or more months, sciatica continues and become progressively worse, surgical techniques can be used to relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Surgery is often very effective in relieving pain, although results can vary depending upon the cause of the sciatica. Overall, about 90% of patients undergoing surgery for sciatica pain receive some relief.

Diagnosis

A physician will perform a physical exam on a patient complaining of sciatica in order to try to identify the part of the nerve that is irritated. This exam may include squatting, walking, standing on toes, and leg raising tests. Most commonly, lifting the leg to a 45° angle while holding it straight helps localize the pain. Other tests that may be performed include x ray to look for stress fractures in bones and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) to look at softer tissues and ligaments. A nerve conduction velocity test and electromyography may also aid in diagnosis.

Q: What is the best treatment for nerve pain after shingles?

Q: sciatic nerve pain right DR and treatment?
I am having major lower back pain..I think i injured myself either in kickboxing or yoga this weekend…did the classes back to back..
anyway I’m wondering which DR to see, it feels like sciatic pain(had this when i was pregnant) Should I go see my General Practice DR or a Chiropractor?
What can i do for the pain now..ice or heat?
Thanks in advance!

A: Not sure if you know a trustworthy chiropractor or not. If it’s severe, find an experieced GP or orthopedics.

To deal with the pain, either Ice or heat may do.
There are some creams like Bengay, IcyHot or cream with similar content. The effect is variable depending on individual feelings.
May also consider taking drugs like tylenol or similar analgesics easily bought from walgreens.

Q: What is the best treatment for radiculated nerve root pain? I have it and most of the time it is killing me.?

A: The least aggressivereatment I agree is a physical therapy. If you can afford it Neurontin is anticonvulsant that sometime helps with nerve pain. Last resort, surgery to have the nerve decompressed. Good luck.

Q: Nerve Pain . . . . . . . . . . .?
Herpetic Neuralgia, are their any treatments for the nerve pain that accompanies herpes?

Q: If epidural steroid blocks have not eleviated your sciatic nerve pain, what treatments are recommended?
Already had lumbar epidural steroid block, also had a epidural steroid block of the core. Physical therapy has also been completed.

A: I have sciatic nerve pain and the only thing that relieves the pain is deep tissue massage therapy. I have went through blocks and they don’t work. I find that a chiropractor or doctor of acupuncture can be of great help. But my number one recommendation is a deep tissue massage.

Q: nerve pain?
I am 6 months pregnant and been having the pinched nerve pain. Which I hear is quite normal. It always shoots down my left leg, never my right. And never if I am sitting down, always standing or moving around. What really worries me is that for about the last week, I have had a strange “sunburn” pain on my left front thigh. It is raw and sore to the touch. It feels as thou I have been severly sunburned just in this area. There has been no rash, discoloration, swelling, nothing. Just the pain. It stings worse when my leg hurts. Again If I am sitting down or resting, its not too bad. But to run my hand over my leg is extremely painful. Anyone had this with a pinched nerve, or know what it could be from? Or treatment? I will be calling my dr first thing monday morning, as they are closed all weekend. Just thought Id try to get some feedback before then. Thanks for you help…..

A: It sounds like Shingles. When you talk to your Doctor on Monday make sure to bring that up- that is could be shingles. You described the symptoms in your question.

Q: What is the treatment/ and or medication(also pain med.) for a crushed nerve in leg?
Was in a car wreck in Oct. – doct. says I have peripheral neuropathy, possibility of it being crushed nerve. Have been on Lyrica(to rejuvenate nerve-not working), also was given Tramadol(for pain-not working). I’m in pool therapy 3x a week(not working). Doct. has me wearing the AFO brace(so I won’t get drop foot). Need pain relieve- and want to know treatment if it is crushed. Thanks/All Have A Good Day!!!

A: I can’t believe your doctor only gave you Tramadol (Ultram) for this pain. You need something stronger. Like percocet or at least Vicodin. You need to tell your doctor how your feeling. You shouldn’t have to be suffering in pain when there are drugs out there that could be helping you. Its not fair. I would call the office today and tell them you need something stronger. There are alot of things that can happen to you after such a trauma. I got a chronic pain deasease called RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) after breaking my wrist. One of the major things everyone with RSD experiences is pain that won’t go away after the trauma. You also have burning and redness, but mainly unexplained pain. If this happened in Oct. how come they don’t know if the nerve is crushed or not by now, its been 6 months. RSD has to do with the sympathic nervous system, my doc explained it to me as a light going on when you were experiencing your trauma and the light never going off, so your sympathic nervous system is still telling you your having pain. I hope this helps. You can look up RSD and see if you have any of the symtoms. good luck

Q: Sciatica Nerve Pain – What Can I Do To Prevent Lower Back Pain & Sciatica Nerve Pain?
Looking for some tips and sites on pain prevention & treatment.

A: Sciatica nerve pain affects the lower back and legs. What you call pinched nerve pain are due to bad posture and overweight problems. Rectifying these can help relieve sciatica pain.

Stretching & twisting exercises are crucial for hip, back and leg flexibility. When bending down to pick something, make sure to keep your lower back straight and bend with your legs. This is important as something simple like bending over to tie your shoes can trigger an episode of sciatica.

Q: Does anyone know any kind of pain treatment for Diabetic nerve damage that is natural or herbal?
My mother is 63 years old and has Congestive Heart Failure, Diabetes, Shingles, Gout, Edema, and Lung Disease. Over the past 14 months she has injured the bottom of her feet , the first injury occur ed when she stepped on an ice cube that was on the kitchen floor. She didn’t slip and she did not fall but the pain that was to come for the next 2 weeks was most excruciating and almost unbearable at times! She could not walk on either foot or bear any weight on them, it was really unbelievable the pain in both feet from so little trauma to the one foot!! About 8 days ago she stepped on a little bitty piece of macaroni on the kitchen floor and has been writhing in pain and unable to walk ever since!! She has been taking Ati van and Tram dole for the pain but its pretty much not doing anything. What Im wondering is if there is any Herbal or natural products to help ease this type of pain??

A: Capcasin Cremes.

These are available Over The Counter at most pharmacies.

Capcasin is the chemical in jalapenos that makes them “hot”. But when rubbed on the hands and feet, it deadens the pain.

But the BEST remedy is to KEEP the blood sugars in the normal range. When the blood sugars are kept in the normal range for long periods of time, the symptoms of diabetes, including the nerve pain, will reduce.

Q: Is there a natural treatment for diabetic nerve pain?
My husband has diabetes and he’s been experiencing pain and burning in his legs. The pain is debilitating at times. He’s told his doctor, but the ultrasound shows that his circulation is in the normal range.

Would too much sugar in his diet trigger the pain, or is this a cumulative effect of too much sugar too long? (He just told me he’s been eating bags of jelly beans at work when he gets stressed. It’s not enough that his blood sugar levels are spiking and his A1C’s are good – 5.6 to 5.9.)

Is there anything natural he could do to deal with this? I know there are drugs, but the side-effects are pretty scary. He currently takes Glucophage and blood pressure meds.

A: Have a look at this link, It might help.

Anyways, I believe in the power of prayer, I am praying for your husband’s complete recovery, God bless!

Q: Does anyone know any treatment for siodic nerve pain? i have percocets but cant get a refills so u know!?

A: yeah get a physical therapy treatment, they will show you stretches to do, icing treatments, ultrasound therapy deep tissue massage and a number of other option that brought me relief. Your doctor will know more about the type and cause of your sciatic pain than anyone here can guess. Ask about ibuprofen and dosages that can help with the inflammation, I know you are thinking i had percocet, ibuprofen won’t help, but it can. If you are getting no where you may want to see an orthopedic. If you go to PT do the exercises at home. they are important for keeping the area stretched and the nerve less pinched. I seldom have pain anymore. I hope you get relief too.
